Creating Healthy Boundaries

A major aspect of mental and spiritual health is the creation of healthy boundaries in our lives. Henry Cloud’s book “Boundaries” discusses this subject well. Here are ten of his suggestions of how we can create those boundaries in our relationships.

  1.  Recognize weaknesses from your life that result from a lack of self-control.
  2. Train your mind for godly thinking, reacting, and behaving.
  3. Recognize the effects of your past (family, relationships, experiences) on your present day.
  4. Recognize that some people find harmful ways to achieve their goals.
  5. Recognize the danger of your desire to please people.
  6. Surrender your right for revenge and anger. Hand that to the Lord.
  7. Make your religion your own.
  8. Release your emotional hurt to the Lord instead of covering it with excessive behavior. Some will use overeating or undisciplined activities to hide inside the pain.
  9. Live more in the light of the resurrected Christ’s power.
  10. Don’t expect to be self controlled without the habit of prayer, bible study, and personal service.
