There are many different religions around the world, each claiming to be a true way to God or to a higher power. Growing up in the American South, most people here are Christian or at least some form of Christ follower. But is our insistence on New Testament Christianity a result of societal pressure or is it based on reasonable evidence? Here are four ways we can certify that our faith in Jesus is legitimate.
Christianity is true because it best explains the world we live in today. The order and design of creation calls for a divine designer, Romans 1:20.There are too many variables for this to have been a happy accident. The order of the nations, from the preservation of the Jewish remnant during the moving of great world powers to create a perfect cradle of Jesus and the Christian movement (Galatians 4:4) to the rise of Western Civilization that has preserved it through the centuries, demands an active and benevolent God. As we examine science and history, we see the fingerprints of God.
Christianity is true because the Bible is the Word of God. While there are many books that claim to be inspired by deity, the Scriptures stand out because of it’s fulfilled prophecy (Daniel 2 and others), historical accuracy, and it’s perfect unity (40 men writing over 1500 years all agree on historical and spiritual subjects). No other book possesses these credentials. There is no other book that compares with the Bible in its veracity or accuracy. Therefore we can trust its claims.
Christianity is true because of the claims of Jesus. While it has become fashionable for many scholars to discuss an “historical Jesus” that is different from what we read of in the Scriptures, we possess copies of texts of Scripture that go almost all the way back to the very lives of the Apostles. These texts speak of Jesus’ claims to be the Son of God, of his death, burial and resurrection and of the formation of the Lord’s church. Christianity cannot be syncretistic with other world religions. Either Jesus is true and all other ways are false, or Jesus is a lying myth, John 14:6. The evidence clearly points to the historical accuracy of the Bible’s portrayal of Jesus.
Christianity is true because of its effect on humanity. Though opposed vehemently by the Jewish leadership, the Roman government and the pagan religions of the day, Christianity filled the whole world with its doctrine within one generation. It brought down an empire and created a world which valued life, promoted personal freedom and transformed lives. No other philosophy or religion has had such a positive effect on mankind. Even today we see many among us who have been fully transformed by the power of the Spirit in their lives.
Christianity is not a mythological, better felt than told sort of religion that fades under the light of scrutiny. It has withstood the assaults of men through the generations that have attempted to discredit it. Our faith is reasonable, powerful and true. Thank the Lord that we live in a time and place that it is convenient to live as a Christian.
